There are three sensible ways to get from Addis Ababa to Hawassa: a car with a driver, a long-distance bus, or a short Ethiopian Airlines flight. The flight is the fastest in the air, but once you add the airport runs and check-in, a car that leaves early often gets you to your lakeside hotel at about the same time, with the Rift Valley lakes on the way.
We're a family-run private driver service in Addis Ababa, and Hawassa is a road we drive regularly. Below is an honest comparison of all three as of October 2026, including the times nobody puts on a timetable: getting to the bus before dawn, or to Bole an hour before your flight.
Car, bus or flight: which is fastest door to door?
| Option | Time | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car with driver (whole car) | About 4½–5 h of driving, more with lake stops; hotel to hotel | From $150 per car one way (fixed quote) | Families, groups, luggage, stops at Ziway, Langano or Abijatta-Shalla |
| Long-distance coach | About 5–6 h on the bus, 6–7 h door to door with the dawn start | Per seat (booking sites showed about US$5–23 in Oct 2026) | Solo travellers on a tight budget with light bags |
| Ethiopian Airlines flight | About 1 h in the air, roughly 3–4 h door to door | Per seat (about US$80–120 one way on booking sites, Oct 2026) | Short trips when the timetable suits you, or flying on from Hawassa |
The door-to-door times are our own estimates from a central Addis hotel and include getting to the bus or airport, waiting, and the last ride into Hawassa. Addis traffic can move them either way. Fares change daily, so treat the bus and flight figures as a rough guide, not a price list.
How does the bus to Hawassa work?
Coaches to Hawassa leave Addis early, mostly between about 5 and 7 am, so they arrive well before dark. Companies such as Selam sell seats from their own ticket offices, and the Hawassa coaches have long left from around Meskel Square. Departure points can move, so confirm the exact place and time when you buy your ticket, ideally a day or two ahead, because seats sell out.
The ride itself takes about 5 to 6 hours. In October 2026 booking sites listed seats from roughly US$5 to US$23, depending on the company and seat type. Fares in birr change often, so check the current price at the ticket office rather than trusting an old guide.
What the timetable doesn't show is the start: you need to be at the bus before dawn, with your bags, in a city where walking around in the dark isn't a good idea. Keep your passport, phone and cash on you rather than in the hold. Shared minibuses also run the route, but they're more crowded and we don't suggest them for visitors. Our guide on whether long-distance buses in Ethiopia are safe goes into more detail.
Is there a flight from Addis Ababa to Hawassa?
Yes. Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa Bole to Hawassa (airport code AWA), and as of October 2026 schedule sites show about three flights a day. The flight takes roughly 55 minutes to an hour. Booking sites showed one-way fares from about US$80 up to about US$120 in October 2026, and the price moves with the date and how full the plane is.
Domestic flights leave from Terminal 1 at Bole. Be there at least an hour before departure, and allow for Addis traffic and the security check at the terminal door. If you flew into Ethiopia on Ethiopian Airlines, ask whether a lower domestic fare applies to your ticket. In Hawassa, arrange your ride from the airport into town before you land, through your hotel or your own driver. More in how domestic flights in Ethiopia work.
Add it all up and the one-hour flight becomes roughly three to four hours from your Addis hotel to your Hawassa hotel. It's a good choice if you're short on time or flying on, less so if you'd like to see anything along the way.

Why do many travellers go by car with a driver?
Because the road itself is half the trip. The A7 south runs down the Rift Valley past a string of lakes, and with your own car you stop where you like. The drive is about 4½ hours without long stops; our article on how long it takes from Addis Ababa to Hawassa by car covers the distance, the road and the timings stage by stage.
- Ziway: the first big lake on the way south, and a natural coffee stop.
- Langano: a lake with resorts where you can stop for lunch or a swim.
- Abijatta-Shalla National Park: about 200 km south of Addis, known for flamingos on Lake Abijatta and its hot springs.
Our guide on visiting Ziway, Langano and Abijatta-Shalla by car helps you choose one or two stops. A new toll expressway from Modjo towards Hawassa has been nearing completion and should cut driving time further once it's fully open.
Our Addis Ababa to Hawassa trip starts from $150 per car one way, and your exact price is confirmed in your quote. That's one price for the whole car, not per seat, and it includes fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's food and lodging. A sedan takes up to three people; an SUV costs a little more and suits four or more people or big bags. You pay us in US dollars or your own currency.
When should you leave, and is the road OK right now?
We set off early in the morning and never drive this road after mid-afternoon. Our rule is to be off the road by about 3 pm and never to drive at night: after dark you meet animals, unlit trucks and people walking on the road, and official advice is to avoid driving after dark anywhere outside Addis Ababa. Leaving early also gets you out of Addis before the worst traffic.
On official advice: the UK warns against all but essential travel to most of the East Shewa zone, but exempts "the A7 from junction with the Addis Ababa to Adama expressway down to Hawassa" (updated 7 October 2026). Hawassa itself is open and calm, a lakeside city busy with ordinary life. Before every trip outside Addis we do our own security check, using reports from our drivers across the country, and plan the route and start time with you. Always check current official advice too.
Which option should you choose?
- Take the bus if you're travelling alone, on a tight budget, with light bags, and happy with a pre-dawn start.
- Fly if you're short on time, the timetable suits you, or you're flying on from Hawassa.
- Go by car if you're two or more, have luggage, want to stop at the lakes, or want to go from hotel door to hotel door without changing vehicles.
Once you're there, see what to do in Hawassa, from the early-morning fish market to the lakeside paths. And if Hawassa is one stop on a longer trip, our guide on how to travel around Ethiopia compares the options for the rest of the country.
