Quick answer

A private driver in Ethiopia is usually priced per car, not per person, and the price depends on distance, fuel, the number of days, the type of car and whether the driver must drive back empty. Our starting prices are from $30 per car for a Bole airport pickup, from $75 per day for a full day in Addis and from $150 per car one way to Hawassa; the exact price is confirmed in your quote. Booking sites listed private airport transfers from about $55 and full-day guided city tours from about $160 in October 2026.

Most travellers start by asking for a single number, but in Ethiopia the honest answer depends on four things: whether you pay for the whole car or per person, how far the car goes, whether the driver has to come back empty, and how many days the driver is away from home. Once you know those, a quote makes sense, and cheap-looking offers that hide extras are easy to spot.

Below we explain what goes into the price, what is usually included, how booking sites compare with a local driver, and the warning signs to look for. We also publish our own starting prices, so you can budget before you message us. Booking-site prices are what was listed in October 2026 and will change.

What decides the price of a private driver?

  • Whole car or per person. A private driver is normally priced per car, so one traveller and four travellers pay the same. Tours on booking sites are often priced per person or per booking with a guide added, which is why two quotes for the same day can look very different.
  • Distance and fuel. Fuel is the biggest running cost. Ethiopia raised pump prices several times in 2026, including a 16.6% rise for white diesel on 1 April, so longer trips have become noticeably dearer and quotes can change from one season to the next.
  • The empty return leg. On a one-way trip, say Addis to Hawassa, the driver still has to drive home. That return drive costs fuel and a day of work, so a one-way price is never half of a return price.
  • Number of days. On multi-day trips the driver is paid for every day, including days the car waits outside your hotel while you explore on foot.
  • The driver's food and bed. Away from Addis, someone has to pay for the driver's meals and room. Good quotes include this; some cheap ones leave it for you to sort out on the road.
  • Type of car. A saloon (sedan) is fine on the paved main roads. An SUV costs a little more but gives you more room, more luggage space and a smoother ride on long drives and rougher stretches.
  • Tolls and parking. The 84.7 km Addis–Adama Expressway, used for Bishoftu and the road south, is a toll road. Parking at sights is usually a small extra.
  • Night arrivals. Many long-haul flights reach Bole in the small hours, and night pickups usually cost a little more, ours included. A good quote shows that up front.

What is usually included, and what is not?

A fair private-driver quote in Ethiopia usually covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver's own costs. What is normally not included: entrance fees, a licensed local guide, your own meals and hotels, tips and, unless agreed, parking.

Before you pay anything, get these in writing: the route, the dates and hours per day, whether fuel and tolls are included, who pays the driver's food and lodging, what happens if the car breaks down, and the cancellation terms.

How do booking-site prices compare with a local driver?

Global booking sites are convenient and have clear refund rules, but they add a middle layer and often bundle a guide, meals or a coffee ceremony. Here is what was listed in October 2026, all subject to change:

  • Airport transfers. A private Bole airport transfer was listed at about $55, and an airport-to-hotel transfer for up to six people at about $82, tips not included.
  • Full-day Addis tours. A full-day private city tour was listed from about $160, including a guide, meals and a coffee ceremony, with entrance fees and tips extra.
  • Day trips with a local guide. A 7-hour Bishoftu day trip for one to four people was listed from about $143, and longer day trips from Addis at roughly $220 to $413.

These are not like-for-like with a driver-only service: a guided tour pays for a guide's time, and a driver is not a guide. If you want someone to explain churches and museums in depth, a licensed guide is worth paying for. If you want safe, flexible transport and are happy to explore at your own pace, a driver alone is usually the better value. Our comparison of a private driver or tour company in Ethiopia goes into this in more detail.

At the other end of the scale, a yellow airport taxi or a ride app (RIDE or Feres) is far cheaper for a single hop in Addis. You agree a taxi fare at the kerb, though, and app drivers are scarce in the middle of the night. For a wider look at daily costs, see is Ethiopia expensive for tourists.

What do we charge?

We're a family-run private driver service based in Addis Ababa, and we publish starting prices so you can budget. All are per car, not per person, and the exact price is confirmed in your quote once we know your dates, times, luggage and hotel.

Our quotes include fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own costs, including food and lodging on trips of more than a day, so there are no extras on the road. Night pickups at Bole cost a little more, and your quote shows it. In every case the exact price is confirmed in your quote, sent by WhatsApp or email before the trip. You pay us in US dollars or your own currency. If you like, we also book your hotels and domestic flights in birr and add them to the same quote, so you need far less cash and fewer ATM trips. The evening before you travel, we send your driver's name and the car's plate.

What are the red flags?

  • A price agreed only by voice, with no written route, dates or inclusions.
  • Fuel, tolls or the driver's food and room left vague, to be sorted out on the way.
  • A one-way intercity price that looks too low, which often means a surprise charge for the return or a shared car.
  • No clear answer on the driver, the car or what happens if it breaks down.
  • Pressure to pay everything up front in cash, or no cancellation terms at all.
  • A driver who doesn't plan long drives to arrive before dark, or who will go into areas under official advice against all travel.

Does a cheaper price ever mean a riskier trip?

It can, which is why the plan matters as much as the price. Addis Ababa, Bishoftu and the road south to Hawassa are open and busy with ordinary life, and our drivers drive to Hawassa and the south regularly. Some governments currently advise against travel to parts of the north, including Lalibela, Gondar and Bahir Dar, so no saving makes a trip there worth it right now. Check your own government's advice before you book.

Before every trip outside Addis we do our own security check, using road reports from our drivers across the country, and plan the route and the leaving time with you. Fuel queues happen, so a careful driver keeps the tank topped up and allows extra time. More in is it safe to travel by road in Ethiopia.

How do I get the best value?

  1. Share the full plan. Dates, flight numbers, hotels and the number of bags let a driver service price once, with no add-ons later.
  2. Group your days. Two separate one-way trips often cost more than one return trip, because each includes an empty drive back.
  3. Compare like with like. Check whether a quote includes a guide, fuel, tolls and the driver's costs before comparing totals.
  4. Budget for a tip. Drivers are commonly tipped in birr, handed over directly at the end of the trip.

Questions people ask us

Is a private driver in Ethiopia priced per person or per car?+

A private driver is normally priced per car, so the price is the same for one traveller or a small group. Guided tours on booking sites are often priced per person or per booking instead.

Why is a one-way trip not half the price of a return?+

The driver still has to drive the empty car home, which costs fuel and a day's work. A fair one-way quote includes that return drive.

Do I pay for the driver's food and hotel on a multi-day trip?+

Someone has to, so ask. A good quote states whether the driver's meals and lodging are included; if not, agree how they will be paid before you leave.

Do I need an SUV?+

Not for Addis, Bishoftu or the main paved road to Hawassa: a saloon handles them. An SUV adds room and comfort for groups, big bags and long days on the road; tell us when you ask for a quote.

Should I tip my driver?+

Tipping drivers is common in Ethiopia. Hand it over directly, in birr, at the end of the trip.

How much does an airport pickup from Bole cost with Ethiopia Driver?+

Our Bole airport pickup or drop-off starts from $30 per car, with the exact price confirmed in your quote. We meet you at arrivals with a name sign, and you can pay us in US dollars or your own currency.
