Long-distance buses are how many Ethiopians travel between cities, and plenty of trips pass without trouble. The better coach companies have assigned seats and early departures so they arrive in daylight. For visitors, though, a whole car with a driver is usually simpler and more comfortable, especially for the trips most people make, such as Bishoftu or Hawassa. Which bus companies run long-distance routes?

There are two broad tiers: private coach companies with fixed schedules and assigned seats, and older ordinary buses and minibuses that often leave when full.

• Selam Bus. Founded in 1996 and one of the best-established coach operators.
• Golden Bus. Started in 2016, with routes including Hawassa.
• Others. Zemen Bus, ODAA Bus, Ethio Bus, Abay Bus, Limalimo and several smaller regional operators also run services. Some operators' phone numbers do not always work, so check contact details before you rely on them.

What happened to Sky Bus?

Sky Bus was a well-known luxury coach company, and older guidebooks still recommend it, but it has stopped operating, probably around 2020. If someone offers you a Sky Bus ticket, check carefully who is actually running the service.

• Accidents happen. Buses and minibuses are often involved in serious crashes, and vehicles can be overloaded, in poor condition or driven fast.
• Roads. Many roads outside the cities are poorly maintained, badly marked and poorly lit, which is why buses finish their journeys in daylight.
• Minibuses are riskier. Minibuses on shorter routes leave when full and are usually more crowded than the big coaches.

Do buses travel at night in Ethiopia?

Generally no. Buses are not allowed to travel after dark, so some long trips are split over two days with an overnight stop. That is why departures are so early: nearly all buses leave between 5am and 7am, and the last buses of the day tend to leave by about 6pm so they arrive before nightfall. Getting to a bus terminal before dawn also means you need a safe way to travel in the dark.

Which routes are sensible right now?

The classic bus routes north to Bahir Dar, Gondar, Lalibela and Mekelle run through Tigray and parts of Amhara, where travel isn't advised right now. The good news is that there is plenty to do instead, closer to Addis and in the south.

How do you book a long-distance bus?

1. Buy a day or two ahead. Coach seats can sell out. Many companies sell from their own offices or at the terminal, and some also take bookings by phone or app.
2. Confirm the departure point. Different companies use different departure points in Addis. Get the exact place and time on your ticket.
3. Arrange a safe ride to the terminal. With departures around dawn, book a car rather than walking in the dark.
4. Keep valuables on you. Keep your passport, phone and cash in a bag you hold, not in the luggage hold or on the roof.
5. Check the advice on the day. Check the latest travel advice for the regions your route passes through, not just the destination.

So, should you take the bus?

If you are an experienced budget traveller, you travel in daylight with an established coach company, and your route stays clear of the north, a bus is possible, and many people use them without trouble. Just know that official advice for visitors favours private transport.
