We drive Addis to Hawassa most weeks of the year, usually with a family or a couple heading to the lake for a few days. This is what we tell them the night before.
The route in one look
Leave Addis Ababa on the Addis–Adama Expressway, come off at Mojo, and follow the main road south through Ziway, past Lake Langano and through Shashemene into Hawassa. It is roughly 275 km, paved the whole way, and on a normal weekday morning it takes about four and a half hours including one coffee stop. Leave before 7 am and you avoid the worst of the Addis traffic and the trucks around Mojo.

Is the road to Hawassa safe?
Yes. This is the main highway south from the capital and we drive it every week. The things that actually matter: don't drive it after dark (animals and unlit trucks are the real risk), let the driver handle the checkpoint conversation, and keep valuables out of sight at fuel stops. Nothing on this route needs a convoy or an escort.
The road, stop by stop
- Addis → Mojo (75 km, about 1 h). Expressway, toll paid by us. Fast and boring; the trucks thin out after the Mojo exit.
- Mojo → Ziway (85 km, about 1 h 15). Flower farms, then Lake Ziway appears on your left. The best coffee stop is in Ziway town.
- Ziway → Shashemene (90 km, about 1 h 20). The Langano turn-off is halfway. Slow down for the roadworks and the market towns.
- Shashemene → Hawassa (25 km, about 30 min). Checkpoint, then the lake. The fish market is on the north shore; go early in the morning.
When to go and what to do when you arrive
Hawassa is good year-round; the rainy season (June to September) brings afternoon showers but the road stays open. Two nights is the right length: the fish market at sunrise, a boat to see the hippos, a walk along the lakeside promenade at dusk, and a lazy afternoon at one of the resorts. If you have a third day, Wondo Genet hot springs are 30 minutes away.

Can we stop at Lake Langano on the way?+−
Yes, and most people do. It adds about 30 minutes. We know which beaches are open and which resorts let day visitors in.
Is the price the same for 1 person or 4?+−
Yes. You book the whole car, so the quote is the same whether you are one person or four. Luggage is included.
Can you pick us up straight from Bole airport and drive to Hawassa?+−
Yes. We meet you at arrivals with a name sign and drive straight south. After a long flight most people prefer a night in Addis first, but it is your call.
Do you drive back the same day?+−
We can, but it makes a 9-hour day. Most people stay two nights and we either wait in Hawassa or come back for you.
How long does the bus take from Addis to Hawassa?+−
The coaches (Selam, Ethio Bus) take 5 to 6 hours from their Addis terminals; shared minibuses from Mexico or Tele Bar take 5 to 7 hours depending on stops.
