Quick answer

If you land in Addis Ababa at 2 am, the safest way to your hotel is a ride you booked before you flew: a private driver or your hotel's pickup waiting outside arrivals with your name. Bole is busy through the night and has banks, ATMs and telecom desks inside, but ride-app drivers thin out late and you may not have a working SIM yet. Don't walk, don't take a kerbside taxi without an agreed price, and leave any drive out of Addis until the next morning.

Landing in Addis Ababa in the middle of the night is normal. Bole is one of Africa's busiest hubs, and much of its traffic happens after dark. The airport works the same at 2 am as at 2 pm. What changes is the ride to your hotel: fewer app drivers, fewer shuttles, and you're tired, probably without a local SIM, holding unfamiliar money.

The fix is simple: decide how you'll get to your hotel before you board. This guide walks you through that decision and ends with a short checklist. We're a family-run driver service in Addis, open 24/7, and our Bole airport pickup is built for exactly this: a driver waiting outside arrivals with your name on a sign, whatever time you land. If you mainly want to know how safe the airport itself is, read is Bole airport safe first.

What is Bole like when you land at night?

Busy. Ethiopian Airlines runs Bole in waves: flights from around Africa land in the late evening, long-haul departures leave from around midnight to 2 am, and another wave of arrivals builds before dawn. A 1 am arrival often means queues at immigration and a crowded baggage hall, not an empty terminal.

Outside is quieter. Taxis wait around the clock, but fewer of them. Ride-app coverage thins out late, especially after about 11 pm. Smaller hotels may not send a car at that hour unless you asked in advance. That's why your night plan matters more than your day plan.

What can you sort out before you walk out?

Do everything inside. Before the exit, the arrivals area has forex bank counters, an ATM, telecom services and free Wi-Fi. No one publishes their night hours, so treat them as a bonus, not your plan. Once you step outside, getting back in isn't easy.

  • Wi-Fi: connect and message your driver or hotel that you've landed.
  • Cash: take a little birr for water and tips. As of early October 2026, banks pay about 160–163 birr per US dollar.
  • SIM: if the telecom desk is open, a local SIM makes calls with drivers much easier. Bring your passport to register it.
  • Bags: keep your phone, passport and cash on you, not on the trolley. Pickpockets and bag-snatchers work around the airport.

Our guide to arriving at Bole step by step covers the visa desk, immigration and customs in order.

1. A driver you booked before you flew

This is what official advice points to: airport transport organised by your hotel or a travel company. You know the price, the driver knows your name, and nothing depends on your phone working the moment you land. It's the easiest choice with children, lots of luggage or a flat battery.

2. Your hotel's pickup or shuttle

Good if your hotel runs one at night and you've sent them your flight. Ask before you book the room, not after you land, and get the name of the person meeting you. Hotel drivers usually wait just outside arrivals with a hotel sign.

3. A ride app, if you already have data

RIDE and Feres work in Addis, and an app ride beats haggling at the kerb. At night it's harder: you need data and a phone number the driver can call (drivers often phone, usually in Amharic), you'll normally pay in birr cash, and late-night coverage is thin. Check that the car and plate match the app before you get in. Our guide on whether RIDE, Feres and Yango are safe for tourists goes through it.

4. A taxi at the kerb

Least advised. Meters aren't the norm, and a tired foreigner at 2 am is the easiest customer to overcharge. If you have to, choose a yellow taxi over the blue-and-white ones, agree the full price before the bags go in, and never share the car with strangers.

What does a night ride from Bole cost?

There's no single official fare. Our drivers see airport taxis at Bole ask foreigners about US$30–60 for the ride into the city in October 2026, with the higher figures late at night. App rides come to around 400–1,200 birr, but only if you already have an Ethiopian SIM card registered with your passport and some birr. Late at night, negotiated fares go up, not down. Our Bole airport taxi price guide explains the numbers.

Our pickup is from $30 per car, and night pickups cost a little more. Your exact price is confirmed in your quote, so you know it before you fly and there's nothing to negotiate at the door. A sedan takes up to three people; an SUV costs a little more and suits four or more, or big bags.

What should you do before you fly?

  • Book your ride and get the driver's name and car plate. We send you both the evening before.
  • Tell your hotel you're arriving late, so the room is held and the night desk expects you.
  • Save your hotel's address and phone number offline, plus a screenshot of the map.
  • Set up a travel eSIM at home if you want data the moment you land. Many data-only eSIMs can't take calls or texts, so keep Wi-Fi and WhatsApp as your backup.
  • Carry some US dollars or euros in small notes to change, and a card as a backup.
  • Charge your phone on the plane and keep a power bank in your hand luggage.

Which hotels near Bole have shuttles?

Staying close to the airport on your first night makes a late arrival much easier. The Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, close to the airport, lists a free 24-hour airport shuttle. Many other mid-range and upscale hotels in the Bole area offer free or low-cost pickups too. These are examples, not recommendations: always confirm the shuttle and its hours with the hotel when you book.

The Skylight In-Terminal Hotel inside Terminal 2 is airside, for passengers who aren't leaving the airport. If you're entering Ethiopia, you need a hotel outside.

Can you walk, or head straight out of Addis, at night?

Don't walk. Even if your hotel looks close on the map, the roads around the terminal aren't made for walking, some stretches are poorly lit, and current advice is to avoid walking after dark in Addis. A five-minute ride is the safer choice.

Don't drive out of the city at night either. Official advice is to avoid driving after dark anywhere outside Addis Ababa, and it's our own rule too. If you're heading to Hawassa, Arba Minch or anywhere south, sleep in Addis first. We set off early the next morning and plan to be off the long road by about 3 pm; see our Addis to Hawassa drive for how we run it.

One calm word on the wider picture: Addis is busy with ordinary life day and night. Official advice asks everyone to keep away from military sites and not to photograph them, which is easy to follow on the way to your hotel.

What does a 2 am arrival look like, step by step?

  1. On the plane. Charge your phone and check you have your hotel address and driver's details offline.
  2. Immigration and bags. Keep your passport, phone and cash on you.
  3. Before the exit. Join the free Wi-Fi, message your driver or hotel, and get a little birr if a counter or ATM is working.
  4. Walk out. Look for your name on a sign. Politely ignore anyone who walks up offering a ride.
  5. Check before you get in. The driver should know your name, and the plate should match what you were sent.
  6. At the hotel. Go straight in, rest, and keep anything outside Addis for daylight.

Questions people ask us

I land in Addis at 2 am. What's the safest way to my hotel?+

A ride you booked before you flew: a private driver or a hotel pickup waiting outside arrivals with your name. Ride apps are thin late at night and need data and a phone number, and kerbside taxis are the least advised.

Is Bole airport busy at night?+

Yes. Ethiopian Airlines' connecting flights make the late evening, the hours around midnight and the time before dawn some of Bole's busiest.

Do RIDE and Feres work at night from Bole?+

They can, but coverage thins out late, especially after about 11 pm. You need data, a number drivers can call and usually birr cash, so keep a booked ride as your main plan.

Can I walk from Bole airport to a nearby hotel at night?+

We don't advise it. Current advice is to avoid walking after dark in Addis, and the roads around the airport aren't made for walking; take a short ride instead.

Can I drive to Hawassa the night I land?+

We don't. Official advice is to avoid driving after dark outside Addis Ababa, so sleep in Addis and set off early the next morning, as we always do.

Can someone meet me at Bole airport if my flight lands in the middle of the night?+

Yes. Ethiopia Driver is open 24/7: our driver waits outside arrivals with a name sign, and you get the driver's name and plate the evening before. Pickups are from $30 per car, night pickups cost a little more, and your exact price is confirmed in your quote.
