Yes, for most visitors RIDE is a safe way to get around Addis Ababa, and so are Feres and Yango. You see the driver, the car and the plate before you get in, the route is tracked in the app, and the price is shown on your phone instead of argued over at the kerb. That is exactly why travel advice tells visitors to pick app-based taxis over the blue-and-white street taxis.
The harder part is practical, not safety: signing up without a local number, a driver who rings you in Amharic, paying in cash birr, and finding cars late at night. This guide covers how a visitor actually uses each app, as of October 2026. (If you just want to know which apps exist and why Uber isn't one of them, see is there Uber in Ethiopia.) And if you'd rather skip the apps on your first days, our driver around Addis starts from $75 per day for up to about 10 hours; your exact price is confirmed in your quote.
Is RIDE safe for tourists in Addis Ababa?
Addis Ababa is calm and busy with ordinary life, and app rides are among the safer ways to move around it. RIDE is the long-standing local app, rated 4.7 out of 5 from about 5,500 ratings on the App Store and updated in September 2026. It is in English (plus many other languages), lets you pre-book a car days ahead, and lists an English-speaking-driver option.
The risks are the same as with any taxi in a big city, and they are small if you follow a few habits:
- Match the car before you open the door. Check the plate, the car model and the driver's photo against the app. If anything differs, don't get in.
- Never take a "replacement" car. If a different driver says your driver sent him, cancel and book again.
- Make sure the trip starts in the app when you set off, so the route and price are recorded.
- Share the trip with someone at home or your hotel, and sit in the back.
- Don't share the ride with strangers the driver picks up on the way.
- Keep your phone out of sight at the window in traffic; petty theft, not violence, is the common problem in Addis.
What do you need before you can use RIDE, Feres or Yango?
Three things make the apps work for a visitor: mobile data, a phone number that can take calls, and cash in birr.
- A local SIM. A data-only eSIM gives you internet but no Ethiopian number, so it can't receive text codes or calls. A local SIM makes sign-up and driver calls much easier. You register it with your passport; there are telecom desks in the Bole arrivals hall. Our SIM and eSIM guide explains the options.
- Data that works on the street. The app needs a connection to find a car and track it. Wi-Fi at your hotel is fine for booking, but you'll want data once you're outside.
- Small birr notes. Cash in birr is the payment that always works. RIDE added telebirr in 2022, and some apps show a card or wallet option, but don't count on a foreign card. Banks gave about 160–163 birr per US dollar in early October 2026.
- Your pickup point in words. Drivers often call to confirm where you are, usually in Amharic. Have your hotel's name and a nearby landmark ready, or hand the phone to a hotel receptionist.
RIDE, Feres or Yango: how do they compare for visitors?
| Option | Time | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| RIDE | Book now or days ahead | Shown in app | First choice for most visitors; English app, pre-booking |
| Feres | Book now or schedule | Shown in app | Comparing price and availability with RIDE |
| Yango | Book now | Shown in app, cash | A third app to check when the others show no cars |
| ZayRide | Book now | Shown in app | The oldest local app; a backup |
| Our driver for the day | Up to about 10 hours | Fixed quote | First days, many stops, night arrivals, no SIM needed |
RIDE
The app most visitors start with. Pre-booking is useful for an early flight or a fixed appointment, because you aren't relying on a car being nearby at that moment. Pay the driver in birr unless you've set up another way in the app.
Feres
RIDE's main local rival. It works the same way: set a pickup and destination, see the price, and the driver comes to you. Many residents keep both apps and book whichever shows a nearer car or a lower price.
Yango
The international app, in Addis since late 2023 through a local partner. It launched as cash only, so keep birr ready. It's handy as a third option when RIDE and Feres are slow.
ZayRide
One of the first app taxis in Addis, still listed in 2026 airport guides. Worth having as a backup, but most visitors manage with RIDE plus one other.

How much does a RIDE or Feres trip cost in Addis?
The app shows the price before you confirm. The last published tariffs (October 2024) were a base fare plus about 16 birr per kilometre for both RIDE and Feres, and prices have gone up since. As a rough guide, 2026 airport guides put an app ride from Bole airport to central hotels at about 400–1,200 birr, roughly US$3–8, with night trips at the higher end. By comparison, our drivers see airport taxis at Bole ask foreigners about US$30–60 for the same ride in October 2026.
So the app is cheap. What it costs you is effort: waiting for a match, the call in Amharic, getting cash. For our full comparison from the airport, see Bole airport taxi prices.
What tricks should you watch for?
- The fake pickup. Someone at the airport or outside a hotel shows you a booking on his phone and says he's your RIDE driver. Your driver is only the one whose plate and photo are in your own app. Walk to the pickup point the app shows instead of following people who approach you.
- "Let's turn the app off." A driver who asks to cancel and agree a cash price is taking the trip off the record. Say no, or book another car.
- Kerbside offers at Bole. Drivers who approach you in arrivals aren't app drivers. Travel advice says to use transport arranged by your hotel or travel company from the airport.
Can you rely on the apps late at night?
Less so. Cars are easy to find by day, but airport guides note that app coverage thins out late at night, roughly after 11 pm. Night is also when you least want to stand outside waiting. If you land late or are out for dinner, book ahead or arrange the ride back before you go.
When is a driver by the day easier than an app?
Apps are great for one trip from A to B. They get awkward when you have several stops in a day: a museum, lunch, Merkato, a coffee house, back to the hotel. That is four bookings, four waits and four cash payments, with your bags in each car.
With our driver for the day, the same car and driver stay with you, drop you at each door and wait outside. You don't need a local SIM, you don't need birr for the car, and you pay us in US dollars or your own currency. We're open 24/7. A sedan takes up to 3 people; an SUV costs a little more and suits 4 or more, or big bags. Planning longer trips? See how to travel around Ethiopia, and for arrival day, landing at Bole step by step.
Questions people ask us
Is RIDE Ethiopia safe at night?+−
The car is far safer than walking, and you can check the plate and driver in the app, but fewer cars are available late at night. Book ahead, wait inside until the car arrives, and never take a car that doesn't match the app.
Does Yango work in Addis Ababa?+−
Yes. Yango has run in Addis Ababa since late 2023 through a local partner. It launched as cash only, so carry small birr notes.
Can I use RIDE or Feres without an Ethiopian SIM?+−
You can browse on Wi-Fi, but sign-up codes and driver calls go to a phone number, and a data-only eSIM can't receive them. A local SIM, registered with your passport, makes the apps work much more smoothly.
Can I pay RIDE with a foreign card?+−
Don't count on it. Cash in birr is the payment that always works; RIDE also takes telebirr. Keep small notes so the driver doesn't have to find change.
What if the driver calls me in Amharic?+−
It happens often, because drivers call to confirm the pickup spot. Send your location in the app, keep your hotel's name ready, or hand the phone to someone at reception.
Can I hire a driver for a whole day in Addis instead of using apps?+−
Yes. Ethiopia Driver's driver around Addis starts from $75 per day for up to about 10 hours, with the same car waiting at every stop; your exact price is confirmed in your quote. Pay in US dollars or your own currency, no SIM or birr needed.
