Quick answer

In Addis Ababa a car with a driver is priced per car, not per person. As of October 2026, our driver around Addis for up to about 10 hours starts from $75 per day, a Bole airport pickup from $30 per car, a Bishoftu day trip from $80 per car, and Addis to Hawassa from $150 per car one way. Your exact price is confirmed in your quote, which includes fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's food and lodging.

In Addis Ababa, renting a car almost always means renting a car with a driver. You pay one price for the whole car, the driver handles the traffic and the parking, and you get dropped at the door wherever you're going. A full day around the city with us starts from $75, and your exact price is confirmed in your quote.

We're a family-run private driver service based in Addis Ababa, open 24/7, so this is our everyday work. Below we explain how pricing works, what a fair quote includes, how a car with a driver compares with self-drive, ride apps and hotel cars, and what to check before you book anyone, us included.

Why do most visitors rent a car with a driver?

Because self-drive is harder than it sounds. Most rental companies in Ethiopia supply the car with an Ethiopian driver, and only a few rent cars for self-drive. Some charge extra if you drive yourself, so going without a driver is often not the cheaper option.

The licence rules for visitors are also short and depend on your nationality. As of October 2026, a UK licence can be used for up to two weeks, and a Canadian licence with an International Driving Permit for up to 45 days. City traffic is busy and unpredictable, driving after dark outside Addis is best avoided, and after an accident you must not move the car until the police arrive. We cover all of this in can foreigners drive in Ethiopia.

For a short trip, a local driver simply takes those problems away. You look out of the window, and someone who knows the roads gets you there.

How does pricing work for a car with a driver?

  • Per car, not per person. One traveller or a small family pays the same for the same car and the same day.
  • Per day or per trip. Inside Addis you usually book the driver by the day, for a set number of hours. Trips to other cities are priced per trip: a day trip there and back, or a one-way drive.
  • Distance and fuel. Fuel is the biggest running cost, and Ethiopia raised fuel prices more than once in 2026. Longer trips cost more for that reason.
  • What's included. Our quotes include fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's food and lodging, so there are no extras to settle on the road. The Addis–Adama expressway, which you use for Bishoftu and the road south, is a toll road.
  • Night pickups. Many flights land at Bole in the small hours. We pick up at any hour, and night airport pickups cost a little more.

Why does a one-way trip cost more than you'd expect?

Because the car still has to come home. On a one-way drive to Hawassa or Arba Minch, the driver drives back to Addis with an empty car, which costs fuel and another working day. A fair one-way price covers that return drive, so it is never half of a return trip.

What do we charge?

These are our starting prices as of October 2026. All are per car, and your exact price is confirmed in your quote once we know your dates, times, hotel and luggage.

  • Driver around Addis, up to about 10 hours: from $75 per day.
  • Bole airport pickup or drop-off: from $30 per car, with your name on a sign at arrivals. Night pickups cost a little more.
  • Bishoftu day trip: from $80 per car, there and back.
  • Addis to Hawassa: from $150 per car, one way.
  • Addis to Arba Minch: from $250 per car, one way.
  • Multi-day trips: ask for a quote, as the price depends on the route, the days and the car.

You pay us in US dollars or your own currency. If you like, we also book your hotels and domestic flights in birr and add them to the same quote, so you carry less cash. For a closer look at what drives the price, see how much a private driver costs in Ethiopia.

Ride apps work well for a short daytime trip across town, but you book a new car at every stop and they're built for the city, not for intercity travel. Uber and Bolt don't operate here; see does Uber work in Addis Ababa for the local apps. A car arranged by your hotel is a sensible choice for a single transfer. For a full day of sightseeing, or anything outside the city, a car with a driver who waits for you is the easier plan.

Sedan or SUV: which car do you need?

A sedan is enough for most trips: around Addis, to Bishoftu, and on the main paved road south to Hawassa. It takes up to three people with normal luggage.

For four or more people, big suitcases or a multi-day trip to the south, choose an SUV: more room, more space for bags and a more comfortable ride on long days. An SUV costs a little more than a sedan. Tell us how many people and bags you have, and we'll suggest the right car in your quote.

What should you check before you book?

  1. A written quote. Get the route, dates, hours per day and the total price in writing, by WhatsApp or email, before you pay anything.
  2. What's included. Fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's food and lodging should all be in the price. If any of them is left vague, ask.
  3. The car type. Confirm sedan or SUV, and that it fits your group and your luggage.
  4. The driver's details. You should know who is coming. We send your driver's name and the car's plate the evening before.
  5. The plan for long drives. Ask when you'll leave and arrive. Our rule for Hawassa and other long roads: we set off early in the morning and are never on the road after about 3 pm or at night.

Can you book a car with a driver for several days?

Yes, and it's often the simplest way to travel. You keep the same driver and car for the whole trip, the driver's food and lodging are part of the quote, and you never have to arrange transport in a new town. A typical plan might be a day in Addis, then Bishoftu, then a few days in Hawassa and the south, with each long drive done in the morning.

Addis Ababa is safe and calm day to day, and the south is open: we drive to Hawassa and the south regularly. The current conflict is in the north, and official travel advice warns against travel to parts of it, including Lalibela, Gondar and Bahir Dar. Before every trip outside Addis we do our own security check, using reports from our network of drivers across Ethiopia, and plan the route and the leaving time with you. More in is it safe to travel by road in Ethiopia.

Multi-day trips have no fixed starting price, because every route is different. Send us your dates, your rough route and how many people are travelling, and we'll send you one quote for the whole trip.

Questions people ask us

How much is a car with a driver in Addis Ababa per day?+

With us, a driver around Addis for up to about 10 hours starts from $75 per day, per car, as of October 2026. Your exact price is confirmed in your quote.

Is it cheaper to rent a car without a driver in Ethiopia?+

Often not. Most rental companies supply a driver anyway, some charge extra for self-drive, and visitors can only use a foreign licence for a short time. For a short trip, a car with a driver is usually the simpler choice.

Is fuel included in the price?+

In our quotes, yes: fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's food and lodging are all included. When comparing other offers, check this in writing.

Why is a one-way trip to Hawassa not half the price of a return?+

The driver still has to drive the empty car back to Addis, which costs fuel and a working day. A fair one-way price includes that return drive.

Do I need an SUV in Ethiopia?+

Not for one to three people in Addis, Bishoftu or on the main paved road to Hawassa, where a sedan is fine. An SUV costs a little more and adds room for four or more people, big bags and multi-day trips.

Can Ethiopia Driver give me a car and driver for my whole trip?+

Yes. We're a family-run driver service in Addis Ababa, open 24/7: airport pickups, a driver by the day in Addis and whole-car trips to Bishoftu, Hawassa, Arba Minch and the south. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates for a fixed quote.
