You've just landed at Bole, you're tired, and someone near the exit is offering you a taxi. What should it cost? The honest answer is that there's no official price list for taxis at Addis Ababa airport, so what you pay depends on how you travel, what time you land, and how much the driver thinks you'll accept.
Below are the realistic prices visitors pay as of October 2026, in birr and US dollars (banks were paying about 160–163 birr per dollar in early October). We've used the higher end of what 2026 guides and visitor reports describe, because that's what a newly arrived foreigner usually pays. If you'd rather skip the haggling altogether, our Bole airport pickup gives you one fixed price for the whole car before you fly.
What does each option cost at a glance?
Bole airport to central Addis Ababa: typical prices, October 2026
- Airport or street taxi (negotiated). Price: About US$30–60 asked of foreigners (roughly 4,800–9,700 birr), more at night; haggling can bring it down. You need: Cash, and a price agreed before the bags go in. Good for: A daytime arrival when you're happy to haggle.
- Ride app (RIDE, Feres, Yango). Price: About 400–1,200 birr (US$3–8), shown in the app. You need: An Ethiopian SIM card registered with your passport, mobile data, cash in birr. Good for: Visitors who already have a working local SIM.
- Hotel shuttle. Price: Often free for guests; some hotels charge. You need: A booking at a hotel that runs one, arranged in advance. Good for: Staying near the airport, any hour.
- Our pre-booked pickup. Price: From $30 per car; night a little more; exact price in your quote. You need: A WhatsApp message with your flight and hotel. Good for: First arrivals, night landings, families and heavy bags.
The centre of Addis is only about 6 km from the airport, and the drive usually takes 15–40 minutes depending on traffic. That short distance is why app fares are low, and why a big curbside quote can feel so out of proportion.
How much do airport taxis charge foreigners?
More than locals pay, and the first number is rarely the real one. Our own drivers at Bole see airport taxis ask foreigners about US$30–60 (roughly 4,800–9,700 birr) for the ride into the city in October 2026, with the higher figures late at night. Visitor reports from 2026 describe kerbside drivers opening at 2,000–2,500 birr even for a 3.5 km hop to hotels in Bole, and being quoted in dollars usually means paying more. You can bargain, but you start from a high number, tired, with your bags at your feet.
Taxis are supposed to use meters, but most airport fares are agreed rather than metered. Late at night, expect to pay roughly 10–20% more than by day, because fewer cars are waiting and you have fewer choices. One guide listed a fixed 150–300 birr fare into the centre as of April 2024, but the birr has lost much of its value since it was floated in 2024, so treat any pre-2025 price you read as out of date.
How much is a ride app like RIDE or Feres from Bole?
Much cheaper. 2026 guides put a RIDE or Feres trip from the airport to central areas such as Bole Medhanialem or Kazanchis at about 400–1,200 birr (US$3–8), the lower end for hotels close to the airport. The app shows the fare before you accept, so there's nothing to haggle over. Uber doesn't operate in Ethiopia; read does Uber work in Addis Ababa for the apps that do.
Why are ride apps hard to use the moment you land?
The price is great; the catch is everything you need before you can book. For a newly arrived visitor, a few things get in the way:
- Data. All the apps need an internet connection. Airport Wi-Fi helps, but it won't follow you to the pickup point.
- A number that can take calls. In practice the apps are hard to use without an Ethiopian SIM card, and getting one means registering it with your passport at a telecom counter. Drivers also often phone to confirm where you're standing, and a data-only eSIM can't receive calls or SMS sign-up codes.
- The call itself. The driver may call in Amharic, which is hard when you're juggling bags in a crowd.
- Cash in birr. Cash is the reliable way to pay, so you need to change money or find an ATM first. Don't count on a foreign card working in the app.
- Late nights. App coverage is decent by day but thins out after about 11 pm, just when many long-haul flights land.
None of this is impossible. If you've set up a local SIM at the arrivals counter and changed some money, an app is a sensible, cheap choice in daylight. Our guide to getting a SIM card or eSIM in Ethiopia explains the passport registration.

Do hotels run free airport shuttles?
Many do. Hotels near the airport often run a shuttle for guests, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee, and some larger hotels have a booth in the arrivals area. The key is to arrange it when you book, giving your flight number, and to check whether it runs at the hour you land. City-centre hotels further away are less likely to collect you for free.
How much is a pre-booked pickup, and what do you get?
Our Bole airport pickup starts from $30 per car, and your exact price is confirmed in your quote. Night pickups cost a little more. A sedan takes up to three people; an SUV costs a little more and suits four or more travellers or a lot of luggage. The price is for the whole car, with fuel and parking included, and you pay us in US dollars or your own currency, so you don't need birr to get to your hotel.
That's often no more than an airport taxi asks a foreigner, and sometimes less. What you're also paying for is certainty: the evening before, we send you the driver's name and the car's plate number, and your driver waits outside arrivals with your name on a sign. We're open 24/7, so it works the same at 3 am as at 3 pm, with no phone calls in a language you don't speak and no bargaining with a suitcase in each hand.
How do you avoid being overcharged or picked up by the wrong car?
- Agree the full price before the bags go in, and say clearly whether it's in birr or dollars and whether it's for the car or per person.
- Carry small birr notes from the bank counters or ATMs inside arrivals, so you aren't told there's no change.
- Ignore anyone who walks up offering a ride. Booked drivers wait for you; they don't approach strangers.
- With an app, go to the pickup point shown in the app, check the plate and the driver's name, and make sure the trip starts in the app. Be wary of a "replacement" car or an off-app fare.
- With a booked pickup, check the name and plate you were sent before you get in. Never go with someone who can't tell you your own name.
Official advice is straightforward: use transport arranged by your hotel or travel company where you can, and if you book your own taxi, choose yellow or app-based taxis rather than the blue-and-white ones. Which option is best value for you?
If you land in daylight, travel light, and already have a local SIM and some birr, a ride app is the cheapest way in. If you're happy to bargain, a yellow taxi works, and knowing the realistic range above keeps the price fair. If it's your first time in Ethiopia, you land late, or you're travelling as a family with bags, a fixed whole-car price agreed before you fly is simply easier. Our guide on how to get from Bole airport into Addis Ababa compares the options on everything other than price.
