Yes, you can leave Bole airport on a layover, as long as you can legally enter Ethiopia. Stay airside and you need no visa at all. Step outside the terminal and you need an e-visa, a visa on arrival or, on Ethiopian Airlines' free stopover programme, the transit visa the airline generally helps arrange.

Do you need a visa for a layover in Addis Ababa?

Not if you stay airside. Ethiopian Airlines says passengers who remain in the international transit area need no visa, whatever the length of the layover. All international flights use Terminal 2, and connecting passengers move between Ethiopian flights without leaving the secure area.

The moment you want to leave the terminal, even for a coffee in Bole, normal entry rules apply. You need one of these:

• An Ethiopian e-visa, applied for in advance on the official portal, evisa.gov.et. The UK government recommends British travellers apply online before arrival.
• A tourist visa on arrival, available only to nationalities listed on the official portal. Ethiopian Airlines' visa-on-arrival guideline says the fee can be paid in USD, EUR, GBP or CAD, or by card.
• The transit visa that Ethiopian Airlines says it generally arranges for passengers on its free 8 to 24 hour stopover programme.

Take the time limit seriously. The Immigration and Citizenship Service guideline published by Ethiopian Airlines warns of heavy penalties for anyone who stays past the permitted transit period.

How does the Ethiopian Airlines free stopover hotel work?

Ethiopian Airlines gives a complimentary hotel stay, meals and airport transfers to transit passengers who meet all of these conditions:

• Ethiopian Airlines operates both your inbound and outbound flights through Addis Ababa.
• Both flights are on a single ticket.
• Your connection is between 8 and 24 hours. The airline says you still qualify even if a shorter connection was available.

You don't book it separately. The voucher is normally issued at check-in at your departure airport; if it isn't, the airline says to ask at the transit desk in Addis Ababa when you land. Independent guides that track the programme say codeshare legs operated by another airline don't qualify, and that it pays to ask for the voucher rather than wait to be offered it.

Will the stopover hotel let you see the city?

That depends on where you are placed. Ethiopian Airlines says stopover passengers are typically put up at the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel or an associated Skylight property. Airport guides describe the in-terminal hotel as reachable only from the departure transit area, so it is a place to sleep and shower without entering Ethiopia, not a base for sightseeing.

If you are placed in a city hotel instead, Ethiopian Airlines says passengers on the programme are generally helped with a transit visa, and hotel shuttles handle the transfer. The airline doesn't spell out which nationalities this covers, so if yours is not on the visa-on-arrival list and you want to go out, get an e-visa before you fly.

What about the new 7-day visa-free stopover?

In April 2026, Ethiopia's State Minister of Tourism said the Council of Ministers had approved a stopover tourism policy. It would let transit passengers leave Bole visa-free for anything from 24 hours to seven days, and was developed with the Immigration and Citizenship Service and Ethiopian Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines' own stopover page, reviewed in August 2026, says the policy still needs parliamentary ratification and is not yet in force. Eligibility rules and a start date had not been published when we checked in late September 2026. Don't book a multi-day stopover on the assumption it's live; check with the airline and evisa.gov.et close to your trip.

How long a layover do you need to leave the airport?

There is no official minimum, but work backwards from the airline's own timings. Ethiopian Airlines asks passengers departing Addis Ababa to be at the airport 3 hours before an international flight (4 hours for flights to the USA), and its check-in counters close 1 hour before departure.

On top of that, allow time for the immigration queue on arrival, possibly buying a visa at the desk, the drive into the city and back, and the security check at the terminal entrance when you return. Airport guides describe that entrance check as thorough, with only passengers allowed in. On a short connection all of this eats most of your time outside, so a proper outing really needs a layover well into the 8 to 24 hour range.

What can you do on a layover in Addis Ababa?

With half a day, the picks Ethiopian Airlines itself suggests are a coffee ceremony, the National Museum of Ethiopia (home of the Lucy fossil), the views from Entoto and a look at Merkato. Ethiopian Holidays, the airline's travel partner, sells guided stopover tours timed around connections.

What else should you know before leaving the airport?

• Cash: A National Bank of Ethiopia directive of February 2026 (FXD/04/2026) removed the customs declaration requirement for foreign currency over USD 10,000, but UK government entry advice, updated September 2026, still says to declare it. To be safe, declare foreign currency above USD 10,000 (or the equivalent) on arrival and keep the declaration. You can carry no more than 3,000 birr in or out.
• Safety: as of 25 September 2026 the UK government reports more crime against foreigners in parts of Addis, including Bole Medhanealem, Bole Atlas, Meskel Square and Entoto, and suggests using road transport where possible, especially after dark. The US rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Advice changes, so check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ethiopia and travel.state.gov before you go.
• Northern flights: the UK says all civilian flights to and from Tigray were suspended on 22 September 2026 and that flights to northern Ethiopia can be cancelled at short notice. It advises against all travel to Tigray and Amhara, so don't plan a side trip there.
• Documents: carry your passport, onward boarding pass and hotel voucher. The UK advises keeping a copy of your passport photo page and visa or entry stamp with you.
• Domestic connections: if your next flight is domestic, you clear immigration in Terminal 2 and walk outside to Terminal 1, which handles domestic flights.
