Be at the Bole terminal door 3 hours before an international flight on Ethiopian Airlines, 4 hours before a flight to the USA, and 1 hour before a domestic flight. The part people underestimate is getting to that door: Addis traffic, the entrance security check and the evening rush all eat into the margin.

How many hours before an international flight should you be at Bole?

Arrival times depend on where you're flying from. For departures from Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines:

• International flights from Addis Ababa: arrive 3 hours before departure.
• Flights to the USA: arrive 4 hours before departure.
• Domestic flights within Ethiopia: arrive 1 hour before departure.

Arrive later than 2 hours before an international departure and the airline may refuse to check you in. Three hours is the right target for international flights, mainly because queues at check-in and security can build up at busy times.

Treat 3 hours as your arrival time at the terminal door, not the time you leave your hotel. Add the drive on top.

When does check-in close at Bole?

Ethiopian Airlines check-in counters generally open 3 hours before departure and close 1 hour before. Arrive after that and the airline can refuse to check you in. Bole has self-service kiosks and self bag-drop counters for Ethiopian Airlines, which can save time. For the late-night flights from Addis to the USA, Canada and Europe, check-in opens at 13:00 local time on the day.

If you check in online (from 48 hours to 2 hours before an international flight, or up to 1 hour before a domestic one), you still need to drop bags at least 60 minutes before an international flight or 45 minutes before a domestic one. Passengers without bags must be at the gate 30 minutes before departure, or no-show rules can apply.

What happens when you arrive at the departures terminal?

Bole has more checks than many airports, which is why the buffer matters. For international departures in Terminal 2, expect this sequence:

1. Entrance security. A thorough screening right at the building entrance, where staff also check your passport and ticket or boarding pass. Only travelling passengers are allowed inside, so say goodbyes at the kerb.
2. Check-in and bag drop. Take the escalators up to the departures hall, check in at your airline's counter or a kiosk, and drop your bags.
3. Passport control. Exit immigration checks your passport and visa. The overstay penalty is 30 US dollars a day, and you won't be allowed to leave until it is paid in full.
4. Security screening. A standard airport security check before the gates and shops.
5. Extra gate checks on some routes. There may be a further security check at gates A14 to A19, which are mostly used by flights to Europe, the USA, Canada and Israel.

Security checks at Bole have been stepped up. Keep your passport, visa and booking easy to reach and don't pack anything that would need a customs permit to leave Ethiopia.

How can you get through the checks faster?

Most delays come from queues rather than problems, but a few habits help at each screening point:

• Check in online if your booking allows it, so you only need the bag-drop counter. For international flights, online check-in closes 2 hours before departure.
• Keep laptops, cameras and chargers where you can reach them for screening. Using power banks on board Ethiopian Airlines is banned, and devices with lithium-ion batteries must be stored under the seat, not in the overhead bins.
• Have your e-visa or entry stamp ready for exit passport control, especially if you extended your stay.
• Leave drones, satellite phones and binoculars at home unless you have prior approval: importing or exporting them without approval is illegal.

If you realise you're going to miss the check-in cut-off, contact the airline straight away rather than waiting until you reach the counter.

Which terminal is your flight from?

Terminal 2 handles all international flights and Terminal 1 serves domestic flights. The two are separate buildings about 300 metres apart, so tell your driver if your flight is domestic.

If you arrive on an international flight and connect to a domestic one, you go through passport control first, then collect your bags in Addis and clear customs before dropping them at the domestic check-in. Give that connection extra time.

How early should you leave your hotel in Addis?

That depends on where you're staying and when you fly. In our experience driving in Addis, traffic can be slow at peak commuting times and around big events, and roadworks can change a familiar route. Many long-haul departures leave late in the evening, so you may be driving to the airport at a busy time of day.

Work it out backwards: your flight time, minus 3 hours (or 4 for the USA), minus the drive, minus a traffic buffer. Or let us do the sum. Tell us your flight number and hotel, and we'll suggest a pickup time with a sensible margin, confirm it in writing and have the car outside on time. If your flight is domestic, we'll take you to Terminal 1 rather than Terminal 2.

Anything else to check before a flight from Addis?

• Flight status: all civilian flights to and from Tigray were suspended on 22 September 2026, and Lalibela flights were suspended from 24 September. Flights to the north can be cancelled at short notice, and travel to these areas isn't advised right now. Check your domestic flight the day before and again before you leave.
• Birr: you can carry at most 3,000 birr when leaving Ethiopia (10,000 birr if travelling to Djibouti).
• Foreign cash: declare foreign currency above USD 10,000 (or the equivalent) on arrival and keep the declaration, as you may need to show it when you leave.
• Souvenirs: antiques need an export certificate, khat can't be taken out, and you may take up to 2 kg of coffee without special authorisation.
• Power banks: using power banks on board Ethiopian Airlines is banned.
