Quick answer

Partly. As of late September 2026, Jinka and the Hamar country around Turmi in South Omo are not under do-not-travel advice, and Ethiopian Airlines serves Jinka from Addis Ababa. But official advice warns against travel near the Kenyan and South Sudanese borders (including Omorate and the Lake Turkana shore), to Konso and neighbouring zones on the usual road south from Arba Minch, and to Maji zone in South West Ethiopia Region. In January 2026 two tourists and their driver were killed in a robbery in Suri district, west of the Omo River. Go with a licensed local guide, check the latest advice, and plan the route carefully.

You can visit parts of the Omo Valley right now, but not all of it, and it needs more planning than anywhere else in the south. Jinka, the main town of South Omo, and the Hamar area around Turmi are not under do-not-travel advice, and Ethiopian Airlines serves Jinka from Addis Ababa. Several areas nearby are under warnings, including the border areas, Konso on the main road in, and the country west of the Omo River.

The Omo Valley is one of the most culturally diverse places in Africa, home to more than 20 peoples, including the Hamar, Mursi, Ari, Karo and Dassanech, each with their own language, dress and ceremonies. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the fossils found along the lower river, which have been central to the study of human evolution. It is worth doing properly, and worth doing respectfully.

Current situation (29 September 2026)Official advice currently warns against travel to areas near Ethiopia's borders with Kenya and South Sudan (including Omorate and the Lake Turkana shore), to Konso, Amaro, Derashe and Burji zones, and to Maji zone in South West Ethiopia Region. In January 2026 two Turkish tourists and their Ethiopian driver were killed in an armed robbery in Suri district, west of the Omo River. The US rates Ethiopia overall at Level 3, Reconsider Travel. Check the latest advice before you book.

Which parts of the Omo Valley are open?

Here is how the area breaks down as of late September 2026:

  • Jinka and the Ari country around it: the main base, with hotels and the airport. Not under do-not-travel advice.
  • Turmi, Dimeka and the Hamar area: the heart of Hamar country and its weekly markets. Not under do-not-travel advice.
  • The Mursi: Mursi villages are visited from Jinka with a local guide. They are not in a listed zone, but the area is remote; go only with a licensed guide who knows the current situation.
  • Omorate, the Dassanech and Lake Turkana: close to the Kenyan border and inside the border warning areas. Travel there isn't advised right now.
  • Konso: Konso zone is under a do-not-travel warning, and the main road from Arba Minch towards South Omo runs through it.
  • West of the Omo River: Maji zone is under a do-not-travel warning, and the January 2026 attack on tourists happened in Suri district in this western area.

Advice changes, and local conditions can shift faster than official pages update. Before any trip outside Addis we do our own check using reports from our network of drivers across the country, so we often know about a change before it reaches the news. Check official advice as well.

How do you get to the Omo Valley?

By air: Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa to Jinka, whose airport got a new terminal in 2024. Flying cuts out the long drive and the Konso road entirely, which is why it is the simplest option right now. Schedules vary, so check current days before you plan. From Jinka, local licensed guides and operators run trips to Mursi villages, Key Afer and the Hamar markets.

By road: Driving from Addis to South Omo is a trip of several days, usually broken at Arba Minch. The main road from Arba Minch towards South Omo passes through Konso, which is currently under a do-not-travel warning. If you want to go overland, we look at the route with you first, check it with our drivers, and decide together whether there is a sensible plan or whether flying is better.

We can book your domestic flights and hotels in birr, and you pay us one amount in US dollars or your own currency. We meet you at Bole on the way in and on the way back.

How do you visit Omo Valley communities respectfully?

The Omo Valley has a reputation, fairly earned, for tourism that treats people as a spectacle. Visitors drive into a village, take photos, pay per picture and leave. Communities have little control over who comes, and the photo fee is often the only thing they can set. It doesn't have to be like that.

  • Use a licensed local guide. Guides are expected for village visits, speak the local languages, agree fees in advance and know which communities welcome visitors.
  • Ask before every photo. Photography is usually paid, either per picture or with an agreed fee for the visit. Agree it before you raise the camera, and respect a no.
  • Go to the markets. Weekly markets in towns such as Turmi, Dimeka and Key Afer are where people come to trade, not to perform, and they are a far better window into daily life. Ask locally for current market days.
  • Slow down. Stay a night or two in one place rather than ticking off villages. Buy crafts made by the people you meet.
  • Mind ceremonies. If a guide can arrange for you to attend a Hamar bull-jumping ceremony, remember it is a family rite of passage, not a show.
  • Understand the context. Big dam and plantation projects on the Omo have changed how many communities live, and not everyone welcomes tourism. Listen more than you photograph.

When is the best time to visit the Omo Valley?

October to April is the usual window. Heavy rain, typically from around May to September, can make dirt roads to villages impassable. It is hot and low-lying compared with Addis. There is no or low malaria risk in Addis Ababa itself, but there is risk in many areas below 2,500 m, which includes the Omo Valley, so ask a travel clinic about prevention before you go.

What can you do instead if the Omo doesn't work out?

If the flights don't fit or the advice changes, the south closer to Addis is open and easy. Hawassa has its lake, fish market and Sidama coffee country, the Rift Valley lakes break up the drive, and Bishoftu's crater lakes are an hour from the capital. Our drivers drive these roads regularly, and we can tell you how they are before you set off.
