Is Ethiopia a good honeymoon destination for couples?

Quick answer

Yes, for couples who want culture, food, coffee and lakes rather than a beach. Right now the best mix is a few nights in Addis Ababa for music and dinners, a lakeside resort and spa at Bishoftu, a resort on Lake Hawassa, and for more time, a lodge above the lakes at Arba Minch. The historic north, including Lalibela, isn't advised right now (checked 29 September 2026), and couples should know public displays of affection draw attention and same-sex relationships are illegal.

Ethiopia is a good choice for couples who want something different from a beach honeymoon. Think long coffee ceremonies, dinners with live music and dancing, crater lakes and Rift Valley views, and resorts where you can do very little for a couple of days. There is no coast, so pair it with a beach elsewhere if you want sand.

The easiest way to enjoy it as a couple is to leave the logistics to someone else. With a private car and driver, you go door to door to dinner and back at night, stop wherever the view is good, and never haggle for a taxi. We meet you at Bole arrivals, book your hotels in birr and drive you for the whole trip.

Travel advice checked 29 September 2026Some governments currently advise against all travel to Amhara, which includes Lalibela, Gondar and Bahir Dar, and to Tigray. Addis Ababa, Bishoftu and the road south to Hawassa are open and busy with ordinary life, and they hold the best places for a couple's trip right now.

What is romantic to do in Addis Ababa?

  • A night of music and dance. Fendika@Hyatt, at the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, pairs Fendika's traditional music and dance with Ethiopian and fusion food. For a big, lively dinner show, Yod Abyssinia has singers and dancers performing for hours; recent reviewers suggest arriving before 7 pm to catch it all, and some mention joining a coffee ceremony there.
  • A coffee ceremony. Beans roasted in front of you, ground by hand and poured slowly from a clay pot. It takes time, which is the point, and it is a lovely pause in a busy day for two.
  • The hills above the city. Entoto's forested hills give cool air and long views over Addis; go by car in daylight.
  • Museums and palaces. The National Museum and Unity Park in the old palace grounds make a good slow day together.

Where are the best places to stay as a couple?

Bishoftu: a lakeside spa an hour from Addis

Bishoftu is a resort town set around volcanic crater lakes, about an hour from Addis on the expressway. Kuriftu Resort & Spa, on Lake Kuriftu, is the classic honeymoon choice here, with a spa, pool and lakeside restaurant; it had fresh guest reviews through summer 2026. Lake Babogaya nearby has lakeside cafés and pedal boats for a lazy afternoon.

Hawassa: sunsets on a big Rift Valley lake

Hawassa sits on the shore of Lake Hawassa, a longer drive south. Haile Resort has a pool overlooking the lake, spa facilities and lakeside dining, and was busy with guests in August 2026. Walk the lakeside in the evening, take a boat out, and spend half a day at the hot springs of Wondo Genet, a short drive away. The early-morning fish market is a colourful start to the day.

Arba Minch: a lodge above two lakes

With 10 days or more, add Arba Minch in the south. Paradise Lodge sits high above the town's forest with views over Lakes Chamo and Abaya, and recent reviews in 2026 praise its setting. From there, boat trips on Lake Chamo go looking for its huge Nile crocodiles, and Nechisar National Park's plains have zebras. It is a long way, so most couples fly back to Addis at the end.

What should couples know about local customs?

  • Keep affection low-key in public. Ethiopia is religious and fairly conservative, and showing affection in public can draw unwanted attention. Hotels and resorts are more relaxed.
  • Dress modestly at churches and mosques. Women are expected to dress conservatively, especially at religious sites; bring a scarf and cover shoulders and knees.
  • Same-sex couples face real legal risk. Same-sex acts are illegal in Ethiopia and carry prison sentences of 1 to 15 years, and the authorities have targeted hotels and bars in Addis Ababa. Read your government's advice carefully before you decide to travel.
  • Plan evenings door to door. Petty theft happens in Addis as in any capital. A driver who drops you at the restaurant and waits takes the worry out of late dinners.

How do we look after a couple's trip?

Your driver stays with you, drops you at the door and waits, so dinners, music nights and early starts for the lakes are all easy. Before every trip outside Addis, we do our own security check using reports from our drivers across the country, then decide the route and timing with you so every drive finishes in daylight. We book your hotels and domestic flights in birr, and you pay us one amount in US dollars or your own currency.

How many days should a honeymoon in Ethiopia be?

Seven days covers Addis, Bishoftu and Hawassa at an unhurried pace: two or three nights in the capital, a night or two at the crater lakes, and two nights on Lake Hawassa. Ten days lets you add Arba Minch and fly back to Addis at the end instead of driving. Build in at least one day with nothing planned at a resort; after the altitude and the drives, it is often the day couples remember most. If your honeymoon is longer, you can add a beach elsewhere in the region at the end, since Ethiopia is landlocked.
