Quick answer

In Arba Minch, take a boat on Lake Chamo to the 'crocodile market', where large Nile crocodiles bask on the shore, and look for hippos and pelicans. Explore Nechisar National Park, which covers the land bridge between Lakes Abaya and Chamo, visit the crocodile ranch and the forest springs that give the town its name ('forty springs'), and drive up to the Dorze villages in the Gamo highlands to see their tall bamboo houses and weaving. Arba Minch is about 500 km south of Addis Ababa, a long day by road or about an hour and ten minutes by air.

The best things to do in Arba Minch are a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see crocodiles and hippos, a drive or walk in Nechisar National Park, a stop at the crocodile ranch and the forest springs, and a morning up in the Gamo highlands with the Dorze people, famous for their tall bamboo houses and colourful weaving. Two or three nights gives you time for all of it without rushing.

Arba Minch sits at the foot of the Rift Valley's western wall, about 500 km south of Addis Ababa, between two big lakes: Abaya to the north and Chamo to the south. The name means "forty springs" in Amharic, after the many springs that feed a patch of groundwater forest below the town. At about 1,285 m it is far warmer than Addis, with bananas and mangoes growing around the town. It is the largest town in Gamo Zone and a gateway to the far south.

It is also a long way from the capital, which is where we come in. We can book your domestic flight and hotel in birr, or drive you the whole way in one car with one fixed quote. Our guide to the Addis Ababa to Arba Minch drive covers the route and timings.

What is the crocodile market on Lake Chamo?

The 'crocodile market' is not a market at all. It is a stretch of Lake Chamo's northern shore, inside Nechisar National Park, where large numbers of Nile crocodiles haul out to bask on the mud. Seeing them from a small boat is the signature Arba Minch experience, and Chamo's crocodiles are known for their size.

Boat trips are arranged at the park or through the local guide association. Besides crocodiles, look out for hippos surfacing, monitor lizards and plenty of water birds: pelicans, herons, kingfishers and African fish eagles. Early morning and late afternoon bring softer light and more active wildlife. Safety equipment on boats is not always provided, so check for life jackets before you set off and keep your hands inside the boat.

What can you see in Nechisar National Park?

Nechisar covers the isthmus between the two lakes, locally called the "Bridge of God", and the pale grass plains east of them; the name means "white grass". The main gate is on the eastern side of Arba Minch's lower town, Sikela, so the park is right on the doorstep.

  • Plains wildlife: plains zebra, Grant's gazelle, dik-dik, greater kudu, Anubis baboons and vervet monkeys are among the animals recorded here. Big cats exist in small numbers but are rarely seen.
  • Birds: the lakes and plains draw storks, pelicans, flamingos, kingfishers and fish eagles.
  • Forty Springs: a short way inside the entrance, the springs bubble up in shady groundwater forest. The springs themselves are modest; the tall trees and birdlife are the draw.
  • Views: from the higher ground, and from viewpoints around the upper town of Shecha, you can see both lakes and the land bridge between them.

There is an entry fee for foreign visitors, and fees for boats and rangers are separate, so check current prices at the gate. Parts of the park's tracks are rough and can be muddy after rain, so plan the route with the park staff on the day.

Is the Arba Minch crocodile ranch worth a stop?

If you want to see crocodiles up close without a boat, yes. The government-run ranch near the shore of Lake Abaya raises Nile crocodiles, from hatchlings to large adults, in separate ponds. It is quick to visit and easy to combine with the springs or a boat trip on the same day. Feeding happens on set days, so ask locally if you want to see it.

How do you visit the Dorze villages?

The Dorze are one of the Gamo communities of the highlands above Arba Minch, living in villages around Chencha. The drive up is roughly 30 km, climbing steeply out of the heat, and takes about 45 minutes. The views back over Lake Abaya are worth the trip on their own.

Dorze villages are known for two things. The first is their houses: tall, beehive-shaped homes woven from bamboo and roofed with thatch, which can last for decades. The second is weaving: Dorze weavers make brightly coloured cotton cloth, scarves and shawls on hand looms, and you can usually watch them work and buy directly. Families also grow enset, the 'false banana', and visitors are often offered kocho, a flatbread made from it.

Village visits are usually organised with a local guide who arranges an entry fee with the community. Ask before photographing anyone, keep an eye on the time so you drive back down before dark, and remember these are homes and working farms, not a show. Lodges in the Dorze area also offer overnight stays if you want a cool night in the hills.

What else is there to do in Arba Minch?

  • Eat fresh fish. Tilapia and catfish from the lakes are the local speciality, served fried, grilled or in a stew with injera.
  • Watch the sunset over the lakes from the upper town on the escarpment, where some hotels look out over both lakes.
  • Hike in the Gamo highlands. Guge mountain, above the town, has walking routes through farmland and forest with Rift Valley views. Go with a local guide.

Is it safe to visit Arba Minch right now?

Arba Minch itself is not under an "all travel" or "do not travel" warning from the UK or US; it is covered by their general country-wide advice. We drive to the south regularly, and before every trip we check the route with reports from our drivers and agree the timing with you.

One exception matters here. Konso, the UNESCO-listed terraced landscape south of Arba Minch that many itineraries add on, is in an area where US advice currently says do not travel, along with the neighbouring Amaro, Derashe and Burji areas. Travel there isn't advised right now, so we would plan your trip around the lakes, Nechisar and the Dorze highlands instead.

Weather is the other thing to plan around. Gamo Zone saw deadly floods and landslides in March 2026, and Ethiopia's weather service expects above-normal rain across the south in late 2026, so allow for muddy park tracks and slower mountain roads.

How many days do you need in Arba Minch?

  1. Day one. Arrive, settle in, and watch the sunset over the lakes from the upper town.
  2. Day two. Morning boat trip to the crocodile market, then the crocodile ranch and Forty Springs, and a drive on the Nechisar plains in the late afternoon.
  3. Day three. Drive up to the Dorze villages, lunch in the highlands, and back down before dark.

If you are flying, two nights is enough for the highlights. If you are coming by road, add travel days either side, and consider breaking the journey with a night on the way.
