Quick answer

For a night out in Addis Ababa, go for live music at Fendika, now performing at the Hyatt Regency hotel, or Ethio-jazz at the African Jazz Village in the Ghion Hotel; a traditional dinner-and-dance show at a cultural restaurant such as Yod Abyssinia in Bole; or the lounges and clubs around Bole, which fill up late, especially at weekends. The scene has shifted from small azmari bars towards DJs and newer music spaces. Petty theft rises after dark, so go door to door by car rather than walking.

The best nights out in Addis Ababa are built around music. Hear azmari singers and Ethio-jazz at Fendika, which now performs at the Hyatt Regency hotel; catch a jazz night at the African Jazz Village in the Ghion Hotel; book a dinner-and-dance show at a cultural restaurant such as Yod Abyssinia; then, if you still have energy, head to the lounges and clubs around Bole, which don't get going until late.

Addis is a big, sociable capital, and evenings out are part of ordinary life: families at cultural restaurants, friends over tej (honey wine) or a beer, young professionals in Bole's lounges. The one thing to get right is transport. After dark, go door to door by car. With a driver for the evening, you can move between venues and get home without flagging taxis or walking dark streets.

What is nightlife in Addis Ababa like now?

It has changed a lot in the last few years. Addis's traditional azmari bets, small bars where a singer improvises verses to a one-stringed masenqo fiddle, once filled neighbourhoods such as Kazanchis. Many have gone in the city's redevelopment, including Fendika's own compound, which was demolished in October 2024. People in the music scene describe Addis as having become more of a DJ city, with live music moving into hotels, event halls and new spaces run by musicians.

That means older blog posts are often out of date. Check a venue's social media, or ask us, before you set off for a place you read about a few years ago.

Where can you hear live music at night?

  • Fendika at the Hyatt Regency. Fendika, the cultural centre founded by dancer Melaku Belay, has run performances as Fendika@Hyatt since December 2024, with azmari music, dance and jazz. It is the easiest place for visitors to hear traditional music played well.
  • African Jazz Village, Ghion Hotel. The jazz club linked to Mulatu Astatke, the father of Ethio-jazz, still hosts concerts: in July 2026 it staged a joint Indonesian–Ethiopian jazz night. Music usually starts late in the evening.
  • Moseb Music Center. Open since 2023 and run by musician Tasew Wendim, who plays washint flute with a band on Monday nights.
  • Fabrica. A café and music space that opened in late 2025, where music is the centrepiece.
  • Venue Warehouse. A mid-sized hall used for live music and DJ nights run by independent promoters.

Where can you see a traditional dinner and dance show?

For a first night in Addis, a cultural restaurant is hard to beat. Yod Abyssinia in Bole serves Ethiopian dishes and tej while performers work through music and dances from regions across the country, every night. Expect a big hall, costumes, drums and dancers who may pull you up to join in. Ethiopian families and groups come too, so book a table, especially at weekends.

Where are the bars and clubs?

Most of the lounges, rooftop bars and clubs cluster in and around Bole, near the airport end of the city, with others in hotels across town. Music runs from Afrobeats and amapiano to hip hop, house and Ethiopian pop. Long-running lounges such as Black Rose mix cocktails with DJs, and the big hotels have their own bars that suit a quieter drink.

  • Go late. Clubs fill up late, often towards midnight, and are busiest on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Dress smart-casual. Some clubs turn away sandals and very casual clothes.
  • Carry cash. Bring small birr notes for entry and drinks in case cards or mobile payments don't work.
  • Pace yourself. Addis sits at about 2,355 m, and many visitors find drinks hit harder in their first days at altitude.

For something more local, look for a tej bet, a simple bar serving tej, the honey wine. They are welcoming, cheap and very Ethiopian, and best visited with an Ethiopian friend who knows the area.

How do you stay safe on a night out in Addis?

Addis is lively at night, and most evenings out are trouble-free. As in any capital, petty theft is the main thing to watch, and it rises after dark. Bag and phone snatches are reported most around busy spots, including the Bole Medhanealem and Bole Atlas areas, where many bars are, so a few simple habits make a big difference.

  1. Don't walk after dark. Go door to door by car, even for a short hop between venues.
  2. Keep your phone out of sight. Check maps inside the venue, and keep car windows up in slow traffic.
  3. Carry less. Leave your passport and spare cards in the hotel safe and carry a copy of your passport.
  4. Watch your drink and don't leave with people you've just met.
  5. Know the law. Drug offences carry long prison sentences. Same-sex acts are illegal, and authorities have detained people at bars where this is alleged, so be discreet.

This is where a driver helps most. Our driver drops you at the door, waits or comes back at the time you choose, and takes you home. You're never looking for a car outside a club at 1am, and we help you avoid the pickpocket hotspots and the overcharging that catch visitors out.

When is the best time for a night out?

Thursday to Saturday nights are the busiest. Monday is a good night for live music at some of the musician-run spaces. The city is at its busiest around Meskel in September and Genna and Timkat in January, when large crowds gather, so plan transport ahead on those dates.
