Quick answer

For a first night, a cultural restaurant such as Yod Abyssinia or 2000 Habesha in Bole serves a spread of traditional dishes with live music and dancing in the evening. For the food itself, Kategna is known for its fasting (vegan) platters, Addis Ababa Restaurant serves home-style dishes and tej in a historic house, and Yohannes Kitfo specialises in kitfo. All five had visitor reviews or listings in 2025–2026.

The best traditional food in Addis Ababa ranges from big cultural restaurants with dancers and live music to small places that do one dish very well. For a first evening, book a cultural restaurant such as Yod Abyssinia or 2000 Habesha in Bole. For the food itself, try Kategna for fasting platters, Addis Ababa Restaurant for home-style cooking and tej, and Yohannes Kitfo for kitfo.

We have only included restaurants with visitor reviews or listings from 2025 or 2026, because places open and close quickly in a growing city. Most of these meals happen in the evening and the restaurants are spread across town, so a driver who drops you at the door and takes you back to your hotel afterwards makes the night much easier.

What should you order at a traditional restaurant?

Almost every meal is served on injera, a large, soft, slightly sour flatbread made from teff flour. Stews and dishes are spooned onto it, and you tear off pieces with your right hand to scoop them up. A few dishes to know:

  • Wat. A thick, spiced stew. Doro wat (chicken) is the festive classic; siga wat is made with beef.
  • Tibs. Pieces of meat sautéed with onion and peppers, from mild to hot.
  • Kitfo. Minced beef seasoned with spiced butter and mitmita chilli, served raw or lightly cooked. Ask for it cooked if you prefer.
  • Shiro. A smooth, spiced stew of chickpea or bean flour, and one of the most popular everyday dishes.
  • Beyaynetu. A mixed platter of several vegetable and lentil dishes on one injera. It is a good way to try a lot at once.
  • Tej. Honey wine flavoured with gesho, a local plant. It can be stronger than you expect.
Fasting days mean great vegan foodEthiopian Orthodox Christians fast on most Wednesdays and Fridays and during longer fasting seasons such as the weeks before Fasika (Easter). Fasting food contains no meat, dairy or eggs, so on those days many restaurants serve mostly vegan dishes. For vegetarians and vegans, this is the best time to eat out. Visitors are not expected to fast.

Where can you have dinner with music and dancing?

Yod Abyssinia

Yod Abyssinia's traditional restaurant in the Bole Medhanialem area is one of the best-known cultural restaurants in the city. You eat a spread of traditional dishes while singers, musicians and dancers perform songs and dances from different parts of Ethiopia. Reviewers in 2026 praised both the food and the show, and suggest arriving by about 7pm so you see the whole performance. It is popular with groups, so book ahead for weekends.

2000 Habesha Cultural Restaurant

2000 Habesha, also in Bole, offers a similar evening: traditional food with live cultural music and dancing. Recent visitors in 2025 and early 2026 enjoyed the performances most, and opinions on the food were more mixed. It suits a first night when you want the atmosphere as much as the meal.

A mixed platter: several dishes on one injera, with extra injera rolled at the side.

Where should you go for the food itself?

Kategna

Kategna is a small group of restaurants, including one on Cameroon Street near Bole Medhanialem and another in Lafto Mall. It is a favourite for its fasting variety platter and vegetarian dishes, and for its house special that lets you sample several dishes at once. The setting is modern with traditional touches, and coffee is served with incense. Reviews from early 2026 confirm it is busy and well liked.

Addis Ababa Restaurant

Addis Ababa Restaurant, in the Mesalemia area, is one of the city's oldest traditional restaurants, set in an old house with round, tukul-style dining rooms. It is known for beyaynetu, shiro and other home-style dishes, and for tej served in the traditional small glass flask. A 2026 guide to the city's restaurants called it the one to choose if you only have time for one.

Yohannes Kitfo

Kitfo is especially associated with the Gurage people, and Yohannes Kitfo is one of the best-known places to eat it, with a traditional interior and kitfo served raw, half-cooked or cooked, alongside fresh cheese, greens and kocho, a bread made from false banana. Listings give more than one address, so check the branch before you go; we can find it for you.

How do you eat politely at an Ethiopian table?

  1. Wash your hands. You will be eating with your fingers, so wash before the meal.
  2. Use your right hand. Tear off a piece of injera and use it to pinch up food. The injera under the dishes soaks up the sauce and is eaten too.
  3. Share the platter. Traditional meals are often served on one large tray for the table. Eat from the part in front of you.
  4. Ask about spice. Berbere and mitmita can be hot. Staff are happy to point out milder dishes.

What practical things should you know?

  • Book the shows. Cultural restaurants fill up in the evening, especially at weekends and around holidays.
  • Carry some birr. Larger restaurants may take cards, but many smaller places are cash only. Ask before you order.
  • Tip. A small tip for good service is normal; our tipping guide explains local custom.
  • Raw meat. Raw kitfo and raw beef are part of the culture, but if you are unsure, order dishes cooked.
  • Getting home. Addis Ababa is a lively, friendly city in the evening. As in any capital, avoid walking unlit streets late at night or flagging cars on the street; a driver who waits at the door is the simple answer.

With a driver by the day you can also turn food into a full day out: coffee in the morning, lunch at a kitfo house, a market or museum in the afternoon and a cultural dinner at night, with the same car and driver throughout. We pay local costs in birr, so you pay us in US dollars or your own currency and need less cash in your pocket.
