Driving from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch takes a full day. The distance is roughly 450–500 km depending on the route, and with stops for food, fuel and busy towns most trips take about 8–10 hours. If you only have a few days, flying is far quicker: Ethiopian Airlines covers it in about an hour and ten minutes.
Online route planners suggest around six and a half hours of driving time. Treat that as the time the wheels are turning, not the time you will actually spend on the road. Ethiopian highways run through town centres and markets, and you share them with minibuses, trucks, animals and people on foot. That is also why we plan every long drive around daylight.
Which route do you take to Arba Minch?
There are two broad ways to drive south, and they meet at Wolaita Sodo, the regional capital and the last big town before Arba Minch.
- Through the Rift Valley. Leave Addis on the expressway south-east towards Mojo, then head south down the Rift Valley past its lakes. The Mojo–Hawassa expressway now bypasses the northern part of the old A7 highway. Near Shashemene the road turns west, crosses the valley floor to Sodo, and runs on down to Arba Minch.
- The western route. Head south-west from Addis through Butajira and on to Sodo, then continue south to Arba Minch.
From Sodo the road continues south to Arba Minch, which sits at the foot of the Rift Valley's western wall beside Lake Abaya. Which route is best on a given day depends on road works, fuel and the latest reports from the towns you pass through, so we decide it with you shortly before you leave.
| Option | Time | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car and driver | About 8–10 hours | Fixed quote | Families, luggage, stops on the way |
| Ethiopian Airlines flight | About 1h 10m in the air | Per seat | Short trips, saving a day each way |
| Long-distance bus | Most of a day | Per seat | Tight budgets; less comfortable and less flexible |
Should you break the journey?
If you have the time, yes. A night on the way turns one very long day into two comfortable ones and gives you something to see. Hawassa, on its lake with a fish market and hippos, is the easiest stop; it is a small detour from the Rift Valley route, and we drive the road to Hawassa regularly. From there, Arba Minch is a shorter second day.
Whichever way you go, leave Addis early. Official advice is to avoid driving after dark outside Addis Ababa, and it is good sense anyway: vehicles often have no lights and livestock wander onto the road. An early start means you arrive with daylight to spare, even with a long lunch.

What slows the drive down?
- Towns and markets. Main roads pass straight through busy towns, and market days bring crowds, carts and animals onto the road.
- Fuel. Ethiopia has had fuel shortages in 2026, with long queues at filling stations. A driver who knows where fuel is available, and keeps the tank topped up, saves a lot of time.
- Checkpoints. Police checkpoints are normal on long roads. Carry your passport and a copy of your visa and entry stamp.
- Rain. Heavy rain slows everything, and the south is forecast to get above-normal rain in late 2026. Flash floods and landslides hit parts of Gamo Zone around Arba Minch in March 2026.
Is the road to Arba Minch safe?
We drive to Hawassa and other southern cities regularly, and ordinary life goes on in the towns along the way. Before every trip outside Addis we do our own check using reports from our drivers, then decide with you the route, any reroute, and what time to leave.
Official advice differs by country, so read your own government's page before you book. UK advice exempts the Addis–Hawassa expressway corridor from its warnings for that part of Oromia. The US rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and its do-not-travel list includes Oromia zones that the main roads south pass through, such as East Shewa and West Arsi. If you want to avoid those roads entirely, fly. Arba Minch itself is not on either country's do-not-travel list.
Is it better to fly to Arba Minch?
For a short trip, usually. Ethiopian Airlines is the only airline on the route, with a turboprop flight of about an hour and ten minutes and several departures a week. Add the time to reach Bole airport, check in and collect bags, and you still save most of a day each way. Domestic flights can change at short notice, so keep some slack in your plans.
A popular mix is to fly one way and drive the other, so you see the Rift Valley without doing the long drive twice. We can book the flight and your hotels in birr, meet you at Bole, and drive whichever leg you choose, all on one quote paid in US dollars or your own currency.
What should you bring for the drive?
- Documents. Your passport and a copy of your visa and entry stamp, for checkpoints.
- Water and snacks. Stops are plentiful, but it helps to have your own between towns.
- Layers. You leave cool, high Addis and arrive in warm Arba Minch at about 1,285 m, much lower and hotter.
- Cash. Small birr notes for lunch and coffee stops; cards are rarely accepted outside the big cities.
- Offline maps. Mobile coverage can drop between towns, so download maps before you leave.
