Quick answer

Bale Mountains National Park is about 400 km south-east of Addis Ababa. By road it takes around six to seven hours to the park headquarters at Dinsho, or you can fly with Ethiopian Airlines to Robe (Goba) airport, about 30–40 minutes' drive from Dinsho. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023, protects the world's largest area of Afro-alpine habitat, the Sanetti Plateau, over half of the world's Ethiopian wolves, mountain nyala and the Harenna Forest.

Bale Mountains National Park lies about 400 km south-east of Addis Ababa. You can drive there in around six to seven hours to the park headquarters at Dinsho, or take a short Ethiopian Airlines flight to Robe (Goba) airport and drive the last 30 to 40 minutes. It is one of the few places on earth where you can reliably see the Ethiopian wolf, on a high, open plateau of giant lobelias and cold lakes.

Bale is a trip of several days, not a day out. The key planning question right now is the route, so we cover that honestly below. We can book your domestic flight to Robe in birr, and for a road trip we check the route with our driver network before we agree a plan with you.

What makes Bale special?

The park covers about 215,000 hectares and was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2023. It rises from around 1,500 m in the Harenna Forest to 4,377 m at Tullu Dimtu, and much of it lies above 3,000 m. Its heart is the Sanetti Plateau, part of the largest continuous area of Afro-alpine habitat in the world. Five major rivers start here and supply water to millions of people downstream.

What wildlife can you see?

  • Ethiopian wolf. Africa's rarest wild dog. An estimated 300 to 350 live in Bale, over half of the roughly 500 left in the world. The Sanetti Plateau and the Web Valley are the best places to see them, often hunting giant mole-rats in the open.
  • Mountain nyala. A large antelope found only in Ethiopia; about two-thirds of the world's population lives in the park. The Gaysay grasslands near Dinsho are the easiest place to see them.
  • Menelik's bushbuck and Bale monkey. Two more local specials. The Bale monkey lives only in the bamboo and mixed forest of the northern Harenna Forest, and is hard to see.
  • Birds. More than 280 species, including several of Ethiopia's endemic birds, plus bearded vultures and golden eagles.

What are the main areas to visit?

  1. Dinsho and Gaysay. The park headquarters at Dinsho sits among juniper and hagenia woodland, with short walking trails nearby. Mountain nyala, warthog and bushbuck graze the Gaysay grasslands.
  2. The Sanetti Plateau. An all-weather road crosses the plateau past giant lobelias, small lakes and volcanic peaks, some over 4,200 m. This is prime Ethiopian wolf country, and you can see a lot from the road.
  3. The Harenna Forest. South of the plateau the land falls away into the Harenna Forest, the second largest moist tropical forest in Ethiopia and a completely different habitat from the moorland above.
  4. Treks. Hikers can spend anything from two to eleven days trekking in the park; ask the park headquarters about current arrangements.

Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa to Robe, also listed as Goba (GOB). The airport is about 5 km from the town of Bale Robe, and Dinsho is a short drive beyond. The Bale Mountain Lodge area, down in the forest, is roughly another one and a half hours across the Sanetti Plateau. Flights are not daily, so plan your dates around the schedule.

By road there are two main routes. One follows the expressway to Modjo, turns south past Ziway to the Shashemene area and then heads east through Dodola and Adaba to Dinsho. The other stays on the expressway to Adama and climbs through Asella to Dodola. Both are around 400 km and a full day's drive, so leave Addis early and arrive in daylight.

Is it safe to travel to Bale right now?

The park is remote, and it is one of only two places in Oromia that the US names as exceptions to its Do Not Travel advice for the region (the other is Bishoftu). The catch is getting there: the towns and roads on the way, including Robe, fall under stricter advice. UK advice does not restrict the Bale area, but advises against all but essential travel to parts of East Shewa off the main A7 road, which affects the Adama–Asella route.

That makes the route the real decision. Flying to Robe cuts the road section to the short drive to the park. For a road trip, we run our own security check before we leave, using reports from our drivers across the country; we often hear about changes before they reach the news. We talk it through with you and agree the route, the timing, or a flight instead, and we will tell you plainly if we think the road is not a good idea that week. Always check your own government's latest advice as well.

When is the best time to visit Bale?

The drier months, roughly November to February, are best for hiking and wildlife watching, with clear mornings and easier roads. The park stays open all year: the wetter months turn the moorland green and bring wildflowers, but rain can make serious trekking hard, especially from July to October. Bale never feels crowded.

  • Pack for cold. On the Sanetti Plateau you are above 4,000 m. Bring warm layers, a hat, gloves and rain gear, even in the dry season.
  • Take the altitude seriously. Give yourself time to adjust, drink plenty of water and move slowly on the plateau.
  • Allow time. Plan at least two or three nights around the park to give yourself a good chance of seeing wolves and nyala.
  • Carry cash. Bring enough birr for park fees and local costs.
