A layover in Addis Ababa can be a few hours in the terminal or a real first taste of Ethiopia. The difference is simple arithmetic: how much time is left once you take off the formalities on arrival, the drive in and out, and the time you must be back at the airport.
This guide gives realistic plans for 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours, as of October 2026. For the rules themselves (visas, the free stopover hotel and who qualifies), read our guide on whether you can leave the airport on an Ethiopian Airlines layover. If you do go out, we meet you at Bole arrivals with your name on a sign and bring you back in good time for your flight.
How much time do you really have on a layover?
Count back from your next departure, not forward from landing. Ethiopian Airlines asks passengers to arrive 3 hours before international flights from Addis Ababa, and 4 hours before flights to the USA. Check-in counters generally close 1 hour before departure, and for night flights to the USA, Canada and Europe check-in opens at 13:00 local time.
Those 3 hours start at the terminal door, and the door is the first checkpoint. Bole has a security screening right at the entrance to the building, where your passport and ticket or boarding pass are checked, and only travelling passengers can go in. Queues there, at check-in and at security can build at busy times, so treat the 3 hours as a minimum.
At the start of your layover you also need time to clear immigration, get your visa sorted if you didn't arrange it ahead, and drive into the city. Traffic in Addis can be slow at rush hour, so leave a generous margin both ways.
What is realistic for each layover length?
| Option | Time | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6 hours | Stay airside; no visa needed | Free (lounges extra) | Coffee, shops, a lounge shower and rest |
| 6 to 8 hours | One short stop near Bole; visa needed | Fixed quote | A coffee ceremony and a short drive through the city |
| 10 to 12 hours | Two or three sights; visa needed | Fixed quote | Lucy at the National Museum, Holy Trinity, coffee or Entoto |
| Overnight / 24 hours | A full day in Addis; visa needed unless you stay airside | Fixed quote | Entoto, museums, lunch, an evening of music |
Under 6 hours: should you stay in the terminal?
Yes. Once you take off the 3 hours before departure and the time to land, clear immigration and drive in, there is almost nothing left for the city. Stay airside, where you need no visa at all.
Terminal 2 handles international flights and has free Wi-Fi, duty-free and souvenir shops, Ethiopian and international food, and coffee bars. There are 24-hour lounges you can enter with a business-class ticket, airline status or a paid pass, and some offer showers. For a proper sleep there is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, past passport control in Terminal 2. See what lounges and facilities there are at Bole airport for the details.
6 to 8 hours: what can you fit in near Bole?
This is the tight band. If you leave the airport, plan one stop, not three. The airport sits close to the city, and Bole is the neighbourhood around it, so a coffee ceremony in a café or hotel nearby is the easy win: green beans roasted in front of you, poured from a clay jebena, usually with incense. Read what the Ethiopian coffee ceremony is before you go.
If traffic is light, add a short drive through the city and back. Decide on the day, with one eye on the clock: the plan is only good if you are at the terminal door 3 hours before departure. Only go out if you already have your visa sorted or qualify for one on arrival.

10 to 12 hours: which sights fit in a half day?
Now you have a proper half day. Pick two or three of these, rather than trying to see them all:
- The National Museum of Ethiopia and Lucy. In the Arat Kilo area, the museum shows a replica of Lucy, the famous early human ancestor found in Ethiopia; the original is kept in secure storage. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is generally open from 8:30 on weekdays and 9:00 at weekends, and closes on major holidays. See how to see Lucy at the National Museum.
- Holy Trinity Cathedral. Also in Arat Kilo, so it pairs well with the museum. Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen are buried inside, and the British campaigner Sylvia Pankhurst lies in the churchyard. Dress modestly.
- A coffee ceremony. The best way to rest between sights, and very Ethiopian.
- Entoto. The hills above the city reach roughly 2,600 to 3,100 metres, with forest paths and views over Addis. Go for an hour of fresh air rather than the paid activities. See our guide to Entoto Park.
A good order is museum and Holy Trinity first, then coffee, then Entoto if there is time, heading back towards Bole well before your cut-off. This is where a driver earns their place: the car waits outside each stop, you never hunt for a taxi, and the driver watches the clock with you. Our driver by the day in Addis starts from $75 for up to about 10 hours; your exact price is confirmed in your quote.
24 hours or overnight: how do you spend a full day?
With a night in Addis you can see the city properly. If you qualify for the free stopover hotel and are placed at the in-terminal hotel, remember it is reached from the departure transit area, so going into the city still means a visa and passing immigration.
- Morning: Entoto. Cooler air, a walk in the forest and the view while the city wakes up.
- Late morning: Arat Kilo. The National Museum and Lucy, then Holy Trinity Cathedral.
- Lunch: injera. Try tibs, shiro or a fasting platter; ask your driver for a good local place.
- Afternoon: one more stop. Unity Park, a coffee ceremony, or shopping for coffee beans and crafts.
- Evening: music and dinner. A cultural restaurant with traditional dance, then an early night before the airport.
Addis is calm and busy with ordinary city life; some governments currently advise against travel to parts of the north, which a layover doesn't touch. Normal big-city care is enough: keep your phone and passport out of sight in crowds.
What is the Ethiopian Airlines Stopover Program?
There are two different things under this name. The first is the free stopover hotel: when your connection is 8 to 24 hours on one ticket, with both flights operated by Ethiopian, the airline covers a hotel night, meals and airport transfers. The voucher is usually issued when you check in at your departure airport; if not, ask at the transit desk in Addis. Within this program passengers are generally helped with a transit visa, but Ethiopian doesn't spell out which nationalities this covers, so check before you fly.
The second is a set of paid stopover packages sold on ethiopianairlines.com under "Discover Addis Ababa" and booked through Manage Booking. As of October 2026 the list includes a Holy Trinity and National Museum tour, a coffee journey, Entoto, Unity Park, Merkato, a night drive, a cultural dinner and a Skylight Hotel night. The page doesn't state prices, minimum layovers or dates, so confirm with the airline before you rely on one. Ethiopian once ran a free city tour for transit passengers; we could not confirm that it still runs in 2026.
How do you get from the airport to the city and back in time?
You can use a ride-hailing app or a taxi, but on a layover the risk is the return trip: finding a car fast, agreeing the fare before you get in, and getting stuck if traffic builds. See how to get from Bole airport into Addis Ababa for every option.
We are open 24/7, so a layover that starts at dawn or ends near midnight is no problem. A driver waits at Bole arrivals with your name on a sign, and we send the driver's name and plate the evening before. The same car stays with you all day and we plan the day backwards from your departure, so you are at the terminal door when you need to be. For a layover outing you book our driver for the day: from $75 per car for up to about 10 hours, and the drives from and back to Bole are part of the day. If you only need a one-way Bole airport pickup, it starts from $30 per car (night pickups cost a little more). Your exact price is confirmed in your quote, and you can pay us in US dollars or your own currency.
Questions people ask us
Can I leave Bole airport on a layover?+−

Ethiopian Airlines asks for 3 hours before international flights from Addis Ababa and 4 hours before flights to the USA. Check-in counters generally close 1 hour before departure.
Does Ethiopian Airlines give a free hotel on a layover in Addis?+−
Yes, when your connection is 8 to 24 hours on one ticket and Ethiopian operates both flights. It covers a hotel night, meals and transfers; codeshare flights on other airlines don't qualify.
Is there a visa-free stopover in Ethiopia now?+−
Not yet, as far as we could confirm in October 2026. A 7-day visa-free stopover was approved by the Council of Ministers in April 2026 but was still waiting for parliament.
Can someone pick me up at Bole and bring me back for my connecting flight?+−
Yes, that's what we do, day or night, as we're open 24/7.
