Bishoftu, still often called by its older name Debre Zeit, is the easiest trip out of Addis Ababa. Its crater lakes and lakeside resorts make it a popular weekend escape, and the town sits right beside Ethiopia's first expressway. Here's how far it really is, how long it takes, and which road to use.

How far is Bishoftu from Addis Ababa?

By road, roughly 45 to 52 km, depending on where you start in Addis and where you're going in Bishoftu. We checked three sources:

• OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM): about 51 km from Meskel Square to central Bishoftu via the expressway, and about 45 km from Bole International Airport.
• Rome2rio: about 48 km (30 miles) between the two cities by car.
• Wikipedia puts Bishoftu about 48 km southeast of the capital.

Starting from Bole or the south and east of the city saves a few kilometres. Starting from Piassa or the northwest means crossing more of the city first.

How long is the drive?

In light traffic, about 45 to 50 minutes. Rome2rio estimates around 49 minutes and OSRM gives similar free-flowing times. The open-road part of the drive is quick. A good share of the time goes on getting out of Addis to the start of the expressway at Tulu Dimtu, on the city's southern edge.

Realistically, plan on 45 minutes to an hour, and allow more at weekday rush hours, when city traffic can add significantly to the trip. If you're heading to or from a flight, build in a buffer.

Expressway or old road: which is better?

The Addis Ababa–Adama expressway

Opened in 2014, this six-lane toll road starts at Tulu Dimtu on the southern edge of Addis and runs to Adama, passing Dukem, Bishoftu and Modjo. The Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise, which operates it, lists Bishoftu-North and Bishoftu-South among its toll plazas, so there are two ways off for the town. Access is fully controlled and the carriageways are divided, which makes it the most predictable way to get there.

The old road

The older highway runs roughly alongside the expressway through Akaki, Dukem and smaller towns. It covers a similar distance, and there's no toll. In practice it goes through built-up areas with pedestrians, minibuses, livestock and trucks, so it's usually slower and involves more risk than the expressway.

The distances are similar, so the choice comes down to speed and predictability. There's also the travel advice: the UK exemption specifically names the expressway and a 10 km band either side of it between Addis and Bishoftu, so that's the route we'd use.

Can you go from Bole airport straight to Bishoftu?

Yes. Bole is on the side of the city closest to Bishoftu, about 45 km away by OpenStreetMap routing. Bishoftu's lakeside hotels are an option for travellers who'd rather not stay in central Addis. Plan to travel in daylight: the UK advises avoiding driving after dark anywhere outside Addis Ababa, and the US advisory says not to drive at night.

Are there days when the road gets very busy?

Yes. Bishoftu hosts one of Ethiopia's biggest gatherings, the Oromo thanksgiving festival of Irreecha, at Lake Hora Harsadi. In 2026 it falls on Sunday 4 October at Bishoftu, the day after the Hora Finfinne celebration in Addis Ababa on 3 October. It draws very large crowds dressed in white, so expect heavy traffic on the way in and around the town.

If you're going for the festival, set off very early and agree a clear pickup point with your driver before you walk into the crowds. If you're not, pick another day for a lake trip. The UK advises staying away from large gatherings in general, so weigh that up too.

Tips for the drive

• Leave outside peak hours. Avoiding the morning and evening rush in Addis can save a lot of time.
• Tolls apply on the expressway. They're paid at the toll plazas, so ask whether they're covered when you get any quote.
• Aim to travel in daylight. This follows UK and US advice, and it's easier to find resort entrances around the lakes.
• Day trip or overnight? A day trip is easy, but an overnight stay lets you enjoy the lakes in the quieter early morning.
• Check the advice on the day. The security situation in parts of Oromia can change, so look at the latest UK and US pages before any road trip.

What about public transport?

Buses do run between Addis and Bishoftu and they're cheap, but they're much slower: Rome2rio lists an Anbessa city bus option at close to two hours. Crowded buses and changes are hard work with luggage, and the UK advises using taxis organised by your hotel or travel company, or app-based taxis, rather than flagging down cars.
